Shagawa Lake

Explore a Minnesota Gem

Bring your poles along for an all-day fishing excursion (who can make the catch of the day?), take a pontoon boat out for a fun-filled afternoon with the family, canoe your way across the water for wildlife watching, or just take in the scenery from the comfort of your lake view room. Shagawa Lake is the heart of the Ely area, offering a place for locals and visitors alike to fish, relax and enjoy the heart of northeast Minnesota.

The 2,344-acre lake is one of the finest in St. Louis County, featuring clean water, plenty of walleye, smallmouth bass and pike, and scenic forest surroundings. Walleye as long as 26 inches have been caught at the lake, along with a 43-inch northern pike. Check out a rod from the resort (free for guests) for a couple of hours to enjoy an afternoon of angling.

It’s possible to reel in a catch without leaving the dock at our Shagawa Lake resort, but if you want to venture into deeper waters, you can rent a boat from our resort or head out on a guided fishing trip. For more information on guided fishing trips on Shagawa Lake, please call Jim Orcutt at 218-349-3658. Canoe and kayak lovers can look to one of Ely’s local canoe outfitters such as Canadian Waters, Boundary Waters, and Packsack Canoe Trips for trip planning, rental services, and fishing equipment so they can reel in their very own “fish tale”.
